Will Credit Card Debt And Student Loans Deny Me From Obtaining A Secret Clearance For The Us Army?

Will i be denied a secret clearance?
I have less than $3000 in credit card debt and I have a Direct Loan(student loan) for $7000.
I have been late a few times on my credit cards, but all my balances are current and below the balance line.
I also had a collector call me for an $86 payment that was due to a doctor. I was two months over the age of 18 when I went to the doctors, the insurance was supposed to cover it but my parents never took care of it…so since I was over 18 the collector contacted me about it. I paid as soon as they called over the phone.
I’m just worried I will get denied for my clearance. I ship out to BCT at the end of may.
So will these factors deny me from obtaining my secret clearance?

If you are not in default you should be fine, unless the debt to income ratio is deemed to be too high. Debt is only one factor considered in granting or denying a security clearance.

That is not enough debt to be a factor when obtaining your clearance. As long as you don’t have MANY missed payments you are golden. Make sure to keep your debt at a reasonable level even AFTER you get your clearance though. I had a buddy who lost his Secret after a repossession appeared from years ago with a buddy he co-signed for. He is a truck driver in the army now.

If your credit is currently in good standing, it shouldn’t hurt.
Spend $10 and find out what your credit score is. It will probably make you feel better.
Also be sure to pull your free credit reports and make sure there’s nothing on there that shouldn’t be.
I went to get a loan and found out that I owned a house – no mortgage, it was paid in full. Unfortunately, most people have BAD things on their report that don’t belong there.

You only have to worry if you are in default, they have garnishments or other if there is civil court orders. (bankruptcies, leans, repossessions, foreclosures)
Most people have some debt. They are looking for bad debt and poor credit risks.
If your credit is less than perfect you aren’t alone.

Fairly hard to judge, they do a credit check for clearances. If there is only a few dings, you might be alright.

As long as you can afford to make your payments you should be fine.

I am not an authority on the subject, but I would be surprised if you were denied based upon so little debt.
